Hi! I'm Kirsten.
I am so proud to be a mom-preneur.
I have two amazing boys, I volunteer in my community and I also work full time in community development. I have been so lucky to find what I believe to be my true calling in life, combining creativity through my business and giving back to the community.
That's why I see myself as not only a mom-preneur but also a community-Entrepreneur because my goals not only reflect my passions and supporting my family but also giving back to the community. My day job for the last six years is literally giving back money to communities and organizations to make our province a better place to live. And through my business I am proud to be able to give back. I just launched in December 2016 and in February 2017 I was already in the position to be able to donate 10% of all sales for that month to the z99 radiothon and have big plans to give back in so many other ways!
Where did it all start?
Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed about starting my own clothing line. I was on the way to the states planning to study in fashion and to play hockey when I had to have major back surgery so that threw a curve-ball into my original plans and I ended up staying in Sask and taking business at the U of R.
Fast forward until a few years ago (and two sons later) and the idea came back about having my own clothing line but the timing wasn't right as I was busy enjoying my mom life and building my career in advertising and community investment. but that longing and desire to create and be a part of the fashion world never left. For my birthday last July my amazing artist grandma sent me a card with the quote " all of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them" and it gave me goosebumps and I just started crying, she had no idea about the internal struggles I had been going through and about my desire to start my own business. It made me realize that there was never going to be a "perfect time" I just had to go for it and follow my dreams wherever they lead. So I started my business Mint & Lux Boutique in December 2016 and it's a mixture of handmade by me items as well as items from around Canada (made by other mamas) and clothing and accessories from around the world. I carry ladies, babies and kids clothing and accessories and home decor. Eventually this business will help me fund my own designs and my own kids clothing line coming very soon with big plans to donate to causes and charities that I am passionate about and who have helped me in my journey through life.
Shop Moms Events
And Mint & Lux isn't the only thing I have going on, I also started a trade show business called Shop Moms Events and it had an interesting start too. About 5 years ago I moved to White City and knew no one. It was lonely being a first time mom and when I had my second I knew I wanted to do something different so I started a moms group for local moms to get together, meet new friends and build our community. I have grown the group to 275 members in a short two years and have been so humbled to see so many amazing friendships and connections being built in our community and the surrounding ones through this group.
The spark for Shop Moms was seeing through this group so many other talented mom-preneurs in the local area, I was blown away and I wanted to do something to support them. Having just started my own business, I was frustrated with the high cost of local trade shows starting at $75-$250 for tables out here in White City. So I decided that I would start my own show and keep the tables low cost to reduce the barriers for other mom-preneurs to participate and to support them with advice and promotion of their business. So April 1 we launched and it was a huge success!!
There were so many amazing local moms that were in the show but I was also so proud to see so many, many moms come and support one another. It has been an amazing experience so far and I have big plans to grow and do so more with the trades hows and keep supporting the local moms from White City, Regina, Pilot Butte and Balgonie and area that believe in the same things I do...that collaboration is key and working together and not against each other is the path to success and building our community!
So far I have been humbled by this journey and the support for my businesses but the thing that has meant the most is the Moms that have reached out. I have had so many women message or email or stop me in the grocery store to say that I have inspired them or they are proud of me and two of them even said they decided to start their own business are restart an old one seeing all the things that I was out there doing and so passionate about.
That's really special because I care so much about women supporting other women and I'm proud that I have been a part of making them see that you can be more than "just a mom" you can be a mom and own your own business.
You can be a mom, and follow your own dreams...
